Balayage vs. highlights: what is the difference?
February 18, 2025 · By the Charles & Co stylists
Balayage and highlights get used like they mean the same thing. They do not. The technique is different, the grow-out is different, and the cost is different. Knowing which one you actually want saves you a disappointed second visit.
Highlights
Traditional highlights use foil. Sections of hair are woven out, lightened inside the foil, and sealed. The result is bright from the root and even. Highlights give you a uniform lift and a more polished finish. The trade-off is a visible line at the root as your hair grows, so you need touch-ups every six to eight weeks.
Balayage
Balayage is painted freehand, no foil. The color is swept onto the surface of the hair, heavier toward the ends and soft at the top. The grow-out is gradual because there is no hard line at the scalp. Many clients go three to four months between appointments. It looks more lived-in and sun-kissed than foil highlights.
Which one is for you
- Want bright, even, root-to-tip lightening? Highlights.
- Want low upkeep and a soft grow-out? Balayage.
- Have a lot of gray to cover? Foil highlights or a root color, not balayage.
