Finding the right hair colorist in Stamford

May 12, 2025 · By the Charles & Co stylists

A bad haircut grows out in a few weeks. Bad color lives with you for months. That single difference is why picking a colorist deserves more thought than picking a stylist for a trim. In Stamford there is no shortage of salons, but the right fit comes down to a few practical things.

Look at real before-and-after work

Filtered Instagram photos hide a lot. Ask to see unedited pictures of color the stylist has actually done, ideally on hair texture close to yours. A colorist who is proud of their work will have it ready. If everything in their portfolio looks like the same blonde, that is a sign they work in one lane.

Ask about the consultation

A real consultation happens before any color touches your head. The colorist should ask about your history, what you have used at home, and how much upkeep you are willing to take on. If a salon skips this step and goes straight to the bowl, walk out.

  • Bring a photo of what you want, and one of what you do not want.
  • Be honest about box dye and at-home gloss. It changes the formula.
  • Ask how often you will need a root touch-up before you commit.

Stamford specifics

Hope Street has a cluster of small salons, and most of the good ones book a few weeks out for color. Plan ahead. If you want to be ready for a wedding in June, do not call in May. At Charles & Co we keep color appointments limited so each one gets the time it needs. Call (203) 325-1596 and we will talk through what you are after.
